NEWEST U.S. SOCCER DEVELOPMENT
ACADEMY TEAMS BENEFIT
FROM FIRST SHOWCASE EXPERIENCE
All Academy Clubs Played Three
Matches, and Had
Opportunity to Experience SPARQ Testing,
Gatorade Hydration Testing and ProZone Analysis in
Lancaster, Calif.
LANCASTER, Calif.
(Dec. 8, 2008) – As U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy Winter
Showcase comes to a close at Lancaster Soccer Center in
Lancaster, Calif., all 74 clubs will leave with a better
understanding of the Academy’s mission, especially the 12 new
clubs that were involved in their first ever Showcase.
Building upon a successful inaugural season, the Winter Showcase
demonstrated how the Development Academy is providing players
with a superior environment to achieve their potential as elite
soccer players. With competitive matches, individualized SPARQ
training, Gatorade hydration testing and ProZone analysis,
players had multiple experiences geared towards improving their
development.
For the new Academy clubs, the Winter Showcase was their first
clear glimpse into the program and how it serves as a platform
to provide educational opportunities to players, as well as
exposing them to competition against the elite youth teams from
across the nation. The 12 new clubs include eight from Texas,
two in the San Francisco area, one in Los Angeles and one in New
England.
“The part that is been most beneficial is the fact that we're
competing against the best,” said Under-17/18 New England
Revolution head coach Mario Prata, who went up against teams
from Washington, North Carolina and Texas. “That alone makes the
players better. The level of the games is always good and the
players are forced to become the best that they can be.”
The Dallas Texans, who have long been of the best clubs in their
region, now has the opportunity to play some of the best clubs
in the nation on a regular basis.
“The competition is outstanding,” said Dallas Texans U-17/18
assistant coach David Hudgell. “It's what we expected and it's
why we came into [the academy], to have the opportunity to play
those teams on a regular basis. Obviously, you get better by
playing the best teams.” (Watch
Video Here)
Along with playing competitive games, the new clubs are also
finding that the structure of the matches – including the no
re-entry rule and playing only one game a day – is also a key
element to players’ development.
“Their preparation is something that I can see has improved
tremendously,” said Texas SC U-17/18 head coach Scott Dymond. “I
think they’re better players already because of it. This is a
program that is for the players, to better the players. I think
in other areas, it’s not necessarily geared towards what’s best
for the players. Our kids now, they put so much effort into one
game, they couldn’t turn around and play a second game like they
normally would in these other tournaments. It’s great to be with
the best clubs in the nation.”
For many clubs, even the travel has been a benefit for the
players as they have to adjust to a different schedule and make
sure they’re fully prepared to play competitive matches.
“(The Development Academy) has been so beneficial for the
players and also for the coaches,” said Texas SC U-15/16 head
coach Scott James. “We struggled a bit with the travel and
playing this morning, so maybe it’s a learning process for us to
get in a bit earlier. The experience of traveling, sleeping in a
strange bed, playing in quality game after game, it’s new to
them. Before, they would only do that if they made a national
final or a regional final, and now we’re regularly getting the
quality games. It’s only going to help the players in the long
run.”
The players on the new clubs – along with every player at the
Winter Showcase – were also observed by U.S. National Team
Scouting Network and more than 250 college coaches who are in
search of future talent. The U.S. staff utilizes specific
evaluation criteria including technical ability, tactical
knowledge and athleticism to classify players in the Academy.
During the inaugural season, 105 Academy players were invited to
National Team camps at the Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20
levels.
During the entire 2008-09 Academy 10-month season, more than
2,000 games are scheduled across the country, all building up
towards a playoff weekend in June. The top three teams in each
division, along with the top five fourth-place teams, will
qualify for the 32-team Academy Playoffs at Bryan Park in
Greensboro, N.C. The top eight teams from each age group will
then qualify to compete at the Academy Finals Week in July.
The next large Development Academy event will be the Spring
Showcase on Memorial Day Weekend from May 22-26, 2009, at the
Sarasota Polo Grounds in Clearwater, Fla. More details on the
Spring Showcase will be coming in 2009.

U.S. defeated Brazil 2-0 in front of a spirited crowd at
the IMG Academies in Bradenton, Fla.
The Development Academy Winter Showcase will feature 148
teams from 74 different clubs in a weekend designed to focus
on the development of players, coaches and referees at the
international level.
The Winter Showcase will also feature some of the nation’s
top young referees, who will be working under the guidance
and instruction of the U.S. Soccer Referee Department Staff.
Officials from Major League Soccer and some professional
referees will also be working games and mentoring the
younger referees. The Showcase will be the first event of
its kind for 12 clubs who are new to the Development Academy
for the 2008-09 season.
U.S. Soccer will continue to provide a technically driven
environment, including SPARQ testing for all athletes and
Gatorade hydration testing for select teams. All games will
be videotaped and distributed to the teams and ProZone will
analyze teams to provide additional objective feedback for
coaches and players.
The Academy Winter Showcase will also provide a platform for
coaching development. College and Academy coaches are
invited to attend a SPARQ Strength Training Seminar led by
Paul Winsper, a Goalkeeper Coaching Symposium led by
Under-20 Men’s National Team Assistant Coach Tim Mulqueen
and Scouting Symposia with National Team Scouts.

U.S. Soccer Communications Center:
U.S. MEN'S NATIONAL TEAM
DEFENDER JONATHAN BORNSTEIN SET TO APPEAR
AT U.S. SOCCER DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY WINTER SHOWCASE
CHICAGO (Nov. 26,
2008) – U.S. Men's National Team Defender Jonathan Bornstein is
set to appear at the 2008 Development Academy Winter Showcase
at the Lancaster National Soccer Center in Lancaster, Calif.
Bornstein, who most recently appeared for the U.S. in last
week's qualifying win over Guatemala, will come to Lancaster on
Sunday, Dec. 7, in the midst of the event which extends over the
course of four days from Dec. 5-8.
The Development Academy Winter Showcase will be the first
Academy Showcase event of the 2008-09 Development Academy
season, though the second campaign of U.S. Soccer's Development
Academy kicked off in early September. All 148 teams
representing 74 clubs, plus the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National
Team will participate in 224 games over the extended weekend.
Dozens of professional scouts from around the world and hundreds
of college scouts are anticipated to attend the event to view
some of the nation’s top prospects from the Under-15/16 and
Under-17/18 age groups. The head coaches from all of U.S.
Soccer’s Youth National teams and additional members of the
National Team scouting network will watch and evaluate all 224
games played over the long weekend.
A new component of this year’s Academy Winter Showcase will be
the Nike International Friendlies, featuring Under-17 Men’s
National Teams from the U.S., Australia and Brazil. The games
will be played on a reserved field at the Lancaster National
Soccer Center.
Bornstein, who has played professionally for Chivas USA in MLS
since 2005, will watch the U.S. U-17's take on Brazil on Sunday.
The UCLA graduate and former Irvine Strikers player is
undoubtedly familiar with the rigors of the international game,
having made 13 appearances for the U.S. Men's National Team
since 2007. The California native debuted for the U.S. at The
Home Depot Center in January of 2007, and scored against Denmark
to mark a memorable first cap in front of friends and family.
The 24 year-old, also played a part in the U.S. MNT's march
through the semifinal round of CONCACAF World Cup Qualifying,
playing 90 minutes during the team's 2-0 win against Guatemala
at Dick's Sporting Goods Park in Commerce City, Colo.
Bornstein plans to tour the Athletes Lounge at Lancaster
National Soccer Park, visit the Gatorade bar, and conduct SPARQ
testing alongside Development Academy players.
The 2008 Winter Showcase will be the first of two Showcases held
during the 2008/09 season followed by the Academy Playoffs and
Academy Finals Week. The upcoming Academy Spring Showcase will
be held in Sarasota, Fla. from May 22-26, the Academy Playoffs
will be held in Greensboro, N.C. from June 26-29 and the Academy
Finals Week will be held from July 11-18 at The Home Depot
Center in Carson, Calif.
Academy Update - 11-19-08
From the U.S. Soccer
Communications Center:
DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY CLUBS
BENEFIT FROM STRONG COMMUNITY
TIES
CHICAGO
(Nov. 19, 2008) – By providing
strong competition for their
young athletes every week,
certain Development Academy
clubs have earned the
opportunity to play matches in
front of more than 1,000 fans to
create a strong professional
atmosphere based on the support
from their communities.
Clubs such as Crossfire Premier
(Seattle, Wash.), Met Oval
(Brooklyn, NY) and Santa Cruz
County Breakers (Santa Cruz,
Calif.), have witnessed
first-hand the intense
atmosphere that their
Development Academy matches can
provide. Each team has hosted
matches with crowds of 1,000 or
more within the last two
Development Academy seasons, and
they attribute the large crowds
to excellent soccer as well as
strong community and club
support.
"We try to get a lot of the
coaches in our program involved
in the Academy program and let
them know what’s going on so the
whole club takes ownership,”
said Crossfire Premier president
Brian Klein. “I think the kids
get into the philosophy of this
club, which is that we’re all
part of one club and we build
from there. We make it clear
that it’s the most important
program that we have in the
club. It’s the program they
aspire to. We encourage the
coaches to bring their kids to
the games. And, you know, we
have a nice atmosphere."
For Crossfire, Klein said the
club has around 7,000 players in
their recreational system and
around 900 more in their Premier
system. They spread news of the
upcoming matches through word of
mouth with coaches and players,
and use their website to make
sure everyone knows when games
are taking place and where.
Also, the club creates a family
atmosphere, encouraging athletes
to bring family members and
teammates to matches.
It also helps that professional
teams have Development Academy
teams, turning matches against
Chivas USA and the Los Angeles
Galaxy into rivalries. Santa
Cruz County Breakers captured
the attention of 1,500 fans last
weekend as their Under-15/16 and
Under-17/18 Development Academy
teams went undefeated against
their West Conference rivals Los
Angeles Galaxy and Chivas USA.
The rivalry aspect also works
well to draw fans to Met Oval
games, where long-standing
competition against other local
clubs such as Albertson
(Albertson, NY) and B/W
Gottschee (Queens, NY) draw
large, passionate crowds. It
also helps that well-known
coaches, such as local legend
Andreas Lindberg and 2007-08
Development Academy coach of the
year Giovanni Savarese, are at
the helm of the Academy squads.
Met Oval also has longtime grass
roots support in the community
as the club was formed in 1925.
“The Met Oval-Gottschee game
drew a lot of people, the Met
Oval-Albertson game drew a lot
of people,” said Jim Vogt,
president of the Metropolitan
Oval Foundation, when talking
about big matches against local
rivals. “Between the three
organizations you have three
good clubs that are going to be
neck and neck throughout the
whole season so you can get
1,000 people to come out and
watch those games because the
rivalries are that big between
us.”
Another facet of community
involvement that enhances the
community atmosphere involves
the use of local sponsors and
support to help defray the costs
of playing in the elite program.
Occasionally, sponsors include
parents of other players, who
pitch in to help some players
who otherwise would be excluded.
“Through sponsors, through hard
work, through out-of-the-box
thinking, as it is now, the
players pay very little money
based on what they get in
return,” said Vogt. “Hopefully,
within the next year it will be
free and we'll provide
scholarships for players.”
Met Oval’s U-15/16 squad will
face off against FC Westchester
(Westchester, NY) at the
Metropolitan Oval at 12 p.m. ET
on Saturday, Nov. 22, followed
by the U-17/18 squads at 2 p.m.
ET. On the West Coast, both
Crossfire and Santa Cruz will
rest during the weekend.

Academy Update -
09-26-08
From the U.S. Soccer Communications
Center:
Nike and SPARQ are very excited
to team up again with the U.S.
Soccer’s Development Academy to
improve the everyday environment
for elite youth soccer players.
SPARQ Testing in 2008/09 Season
The 2007/08 Academy season
established national and
individual soccer-specific
benchmarks for the athleticism
of Academy players. Players who
completed the full SPARQ Soccer
Test Battery in the spring
received a SPARQ Rating, a
unique tool which reveals a
player’s strengths and
weaknesses, enables the
comparison of physical abilities
and will help players and
coaches track training progress
during the upcoming season.
To
build upon last year’s success,
all Academy clubs will be tested
twice during the 2008/09 Season.
All clubs will receive their
first test in the fall of 2008.
Similar to last spring, the
testing will be completed in two
parts:
1.
Pre-Showcase Testing
A
certified Trainer from SPARQ’s
network of over 600
professionals will visit each
club in October or November to
capture three measurements:
height, weight and endurance.
Endurance will be assessed using
the Yo-Yo Intermittent Recovery
Test, Level Two.
2.
Showcase Testing
SPARQ will test all Academy
players present at the Winter
Showcase in Lancaster, Calif.
During the team’s off-day,
players will complete the rest
of the Soccer Test Battery: the
20m sprint, the Arrowhead
Agility and the Vertical Jump.
Clubs will repeat the same
series of tests in the spring of
2009 before and during the
Spring Showcase. The second test
will allow players, coaches and
scouts to track progress over
the Academy season.
The path to improving the
soccer-relevant fitness of
athletes begins with
standardized testing. Players
and coaches who are armed with
an understanding of the physical
demands of soccer – and how
players stack up – are better
prepared to build the kind
athletes who can
perform when it counts.
Integration of Focused Training
Programs in 2008/09 Season
Last summer at the Summer
Showcase and Best Practices
Symposium, most Academy coaches
were introduced to the first
phase of SPARQ’s soccer training
program – the Dynamic Warm-Up.
In the coming weeks, all Academy
teams will receive a DVD of this
training program, allowing
coaches to help prepare players
for training sessions and
matches. In addition to the
preparatory benefits, the
Dynamic Warm-Up also provides an
everyday-opportunity for speed,
power and agility development.
At
the Winter Showcase, SPARQ will
introduce the second phase of
training – a soccer strength
program. SPARQ’s Director of
Conditioning, Paul Winsper, will
be on hand to present the
strength program to coaches, and
advise on its integration into
the everyday training
experience.
Phase three (Speed), phase four
(Agility) and phase five
(Soccer-Specific Speed and
Agility) will be introduced at
later points during the year.
These components will provide a
comprehensive training
experience for Development
Academy athletes, giving them
the best opportunity to develop
soccer athleticism and
ultimately maximize their soccer
potential.
Best of luck with the upcoming
season. We look forward to
seeing you in December.

NOMAD SC
PRESEASON SETS TONE HEADING INTO SECOND
YEAR OF DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY PROGRAM
-
Nomads Open
Season with Tough Test Against U-17 MNT on Sat, Sept. 20
-
Team Held
Two-Week Training Camp in Preparation for Upcoming Season
CHICAGO (Sept. 17, 2008) – Nomads SC (La Jolla, Calif.)
head into their second year as part of the U.S. Soccer Development
Academy with a renewed spirit from their ambitious preseason
schedule. Both the U-15/16 and U-17/18 teams conducted a two week
preseason camp, with most of their preparation taking place in La
Jolla, but rounding out with four days at the U.S. Olympic
Committee’s ARCO Training Center in Chula Vista.
The team took full advantage of the state-of-the-art facilities,
which acts as a home to many of the athletes featured in last
summer’s Olympic Games in Beijing. The Nomad’s team spent four days
taking in lectures, watching film and training twice per day at the
$65 million center that includes four soccer fields, training rooms,
dorms and dining facilities.
“It was the proper environment for setting our season off on a
serious note,” said Nomads Director of Coaching Derek Armstrong. “We
wanted to show our team how serious we were about the Development
Academy. The first lecture when we arrived at ARCO set the pattern
for the weekend and the season and the level of commitment we want
from the players, coaching staff and everyone involved.”
The Nomads will finish their preparations by facing the U.S.
Under-17 Men’s National Team on Saturday, September 20 at Kinsell
Field. The matchups are the second stop on the National Team’s
Academy Exhibition Tour that pits them against top Academy clubs
from across the country over the next eight months. Kickoff is set
for 12 p.m. PT for the U-15/16s and 2:30 p.m. PT for the U-17/18s.
As the team prepares to take on the U-17 MNT, the Nomads preparation
has been geared more toward the nine-month season than the
exhibition game, but Armstrong believes that Saturday’s matches will
be a good test for his squads.
“We know the National Team will have quality players who are going
to make things difficult,” he said. “We’re looking forward to the
opportunity. We’ve organized ourselves for the bigger pictures of
the season, but we’re looking forward to the opportunity. The
ultimate challenge to start our season is to play our National
Team.”
Armstrong feels that even though the results weren’t always seen on
the scoreboard throughout the Nomads first Academy season in
2007-08, the team played well on the field and improved in many
ways. The club has implemented a new level of commitment in response
to the high standards set by U.S. Soccer’s efforts in the new
Academy program.
“The biggest thing is that the Development Academy is challenging
everybody,” said Armstrong. “The standard U.S. Soccer has set with
the Showcases, it’s challenging everybody to upgrade including
administrators, directors, coaches, assistant coaches, players and
groundskeepers. I see a great enthusiasm to build clubs to be the
best. I think that’s what’s caught fire a bit; it has for us anyway.
We know we need to step it up.

US UNDER-17 MNT TO KICK OFF
EXHIBITION TOUR AGAINST
DEVELOPMENT ACADEMY CLUBS THIS WEEKEND
AT THE HDC IN CARSON, CALIF.
Richmond Strikers to play October
11th
CHICAGO (September 11, 2008) – As the U.S. Under-17 Men’s National
Team prepares for 2009 FIFA Under-17 World Cup qualifiers in the
spring,
they will play nine exhibition games against U.S. Soccer Development
Academy clubs throughout the 2008-09 season. The exhibition
schedule begins on Saturday, Sept. 13, when the team travels from
Bradenton, Fla. to Carson, Calif. to take on Chivas USA.
This weekend’s games, which are set for Saturday evening at 4 p.m.
PT for the U-15/16s and 6 p.m. PT for the U-17-18s under the lights
at The Home Depot Center’s Mooch Myernick Field, will mark the start
of the second Development Academy season for Chivas USA. The
inaugural season began in similar fashion, as the U-17/18 Chivas USA
team took on the U.S. U-17 ‘91s at last summer’s Fall Showcase. In
front of nearly 1,000 spectators, the U.S. team went on to win, 3-0.
“We didn’t want to limit ourselves to just playing against one
conference,” said U.S. Under-17 Men’s National Team head coach
Wilmer Cabrera. “We want to play with the teams from all over the
country and to travel all over the country to compete and play in
different scenarios, in different cities. These games are definitely
going to help us prepare for qualifying because we are playing on
the road, so we’ll have the pressure of playing away, which is a
good environment.”
As part of the Academy’s initiatives to build upon the successful
foundation that was built during its inaugural year in 2007-08,
clubs that demonstrated excellence both on and off the field will
have the opportunity to test themselves against the U.S. Under-17
MNT. Nine clubs, selected by National Team coaches and Development
Academy technical staff, will host the team throughout the season.

“These games will be good for all of us,” said Cabrera. “Last
season, the games and the results counted for teams we played
against in the Academy, so it was a bit of an imbalance. In an
exhibition game, the clubs can play with their best players and be
more relaxed when they play us. They can take more risks and try to
show us their best performance, which also means there will be good
opportunities to scout players from these teams who might have the
chance to play for the National Teams.”
The exhibition matches, along with several international training
camps and games, will be used to prepare the U-17s as they attempt
to qualify for their 14th consecutive FIFA Under-17 World Cup in
April or May, when the qualifying tournament will be held in Mexico.
Dates and venues for that tournament will be announced at a later
date. The U.S. is the only country to have qualified for every
edition of the tournament since its inception in 1985.
The U.S. players live on campus at the IMG Academy in Bradenton,
Fla., and train in the morning under the guidance of Cabrera and
assistant coaches Paul Caffrey, Paul Grafer and Keith Fulk, who was
hired before the start of the semester as the team’s third
assistant. In the afternoon, the players attend classes at nearby
Bradenton Preparatory Academy. While in the full-time residency
program, the U.S. not only trains daily under Cabrera, but also has
access to the IMG Academy’s spacious facilities.

TO BUILD UPON SUCCESSFUL INAUGURAL YEAR;
2008-09 SEASON KICKS OFF SATURDAY, SEPT. 6
CHICAGO (Sept. 5, 2008) – U.S. Soccer’s Development Academy
will kick off its second year this weekend with the continued
mission of providing players with a superior environment to
improve their development and achieve their potential as elite
soccer players. The first matches will take place on Saturday, Sept.
6, with six South Conference games taking place in the Under-15/16
and Under-17/18 age groups. (Full
Schedule)
The Academy’s second year will build upon the successful foundation
that was built during the inaugural eight months in 2007-08, looking
to improve upon one of the most comprehensive overhauls of American
player development in history. Even before last July’s Finals Week
at The Home Depot Center, the Development Academy Technical Staff
had already begun evaluating the program’s role in the development
of American players, coaches and referees. The Staff recognized room
for improvement, and will implement changes in its second year that
will allow further opportunity for growth.
“From the beginning of the Development Academy, our goal was to do
everything possible to provide players, coaches and referees with an
environment to help them develop and we definitely accomplished that
during our inaugural year,” said Development Academy Technical
Director John Hackworth. “We know we can improve and we’ve
implemented some positive changes to our programs that we feel
everyone can benefit.”
All 62 clubs who participated in the first year will be returning,
while 12 new clubs have been added in the 2008-09 season, including
eight new clubs in Texas, two in the San Francisco area, on in Los
Angeles and one in New England. With 74 clubs, the conferences have
been realigned into four conferences with nine divisions to provide
a schedule that will necessitate fewer flights for each team to help
reduce costs.
During the 2008-09 Academy season, more than 2,000 games are
scheduled across the country, including two Showcase weekends in
December and May. The Winter Showcase will be held at the Lancaster
National Soccer Center in Lancaster, Calif., from December 5-8, and
the Spring Showcase will take place on Memorial Day Weekend, May
22-26, at the Sarasota Polo Grounds in Clearwater, Fla.
The 10-month season will build into a playoff weekend in June, The
top three teams in each division, along with the top five
fourth-place teams, will qualify for the 32-team Academy Playoffs at
Bryan Park in Greensboro, N.C. The top eight teams from each age
group will then qualify to compete at the Academy Finals Week in
July. In 2008, Finals Week was broadcast live from The Home Depot
Center on ESPNU.
In addition to conference and inter-conference matches, clubs that
demonstrated excellence both on and off the field will have the
opportunity to test themselves against the Under-17 Men’s National
Team, which will play exhibition matches against the selected
Academy clubs as they build up for World Cup Qualifying in the
Spring of 2009.
U.S. Soccer’s vast network of scouts have utilized the scouting
opportunities presented by the Academy, with every team scouted by a
National Staff coach at least 10 times. With specific evaluation
criteria including technical ability, tactical knowledge and
athleticism, 105 players were invited to National Team camps at the
Under-17, Under-18 and Under-20 levels during the first eight months
of the Academy program. Academy players also make up nearly half of
the current 40-player Under-17 Residency Program. Beyond the
National Team, international and domestic professional team scouts
and college coaches have made their presence felt throughout the
season.
The Academy league will continue to serve as a platform to provide
educational opportunities to players, coaches and referees to
enhance their development. Players and coaches will benefit from
individualized SPARQ training programs, Gatorade hydration and
nutrition information, exposure to top professional coaches and
players, video analysis from ProZone and Dartfish and a multitude of
other resources applied at the Youth National Team level.
Referee development and identification will continue to be a key
component of the Academy program. The Academy will continue to serve
as the initial step in the Professional Referee Development Track.
In it’s first year, over 75 new referees identified last year for
the professional referee development track. U.S. Soccer Referee
Department will continue to mentor referees at Academy Showcases and
Referee Symposiums held throughout the country.
